    That olive tree over there is more than three hundred years old.

    When I was a child, my father would take me among the olive trees, where you could smell the earthy scent from afar.<\/p>

    He would point to a specific plant and tell me:<\/p>

    “That olive tree is over three hundred years old. It has seen wars, good harvests, and times of famine. It has survived everything. It bears fruit.<\/em>.”<\/p>

    Today, as I walk among those same trees, I recognize them by their sculpted, knotted trunks, like an ancient hand gripping the rock.
